One of the most valuable lessons I learned during my years as a distance runner was the art of embracing the suck—pushing forward when everything in me wanted to stop. The suck, in this case, was the endless miles, the unpredictable weather, the fatigue, and the mental battles. Some days, running felt effortless. Other days, it was pure drudgery. But like Forrest Gump, I just kept running—whether I wanted to or not.
We all take on challenges that stretch our limits. Maybe it’s training for a marathon, earning a degree, raising a child, or finally committing to our health. These moments pull us far outside our comfort zones, forcing us to question whether we have what it takes. And then comes that breaking point—the 2 a.m. feedings, the 20-mile runs, the midnight deadlines, the countless days of building new habits—when we feel like we have nothing left to give.
But here’s the truth: pushing through those moments is where the magic happens. That’s when we discover who we really are. Each time we face discomfort head-on, we prove to ourselves that we are capable of more than we ever imagined. And that realization? It’s powerful.
What I appreciate most about these experiences is that they build a foundation of resilience. When the next challenge comes, I can look back and remind myself: I’ve been here before. I pushed through. And I came out stronger.
So whatever you’re facing right now, embrace the suck. Keep moving forward. Your future self will thank you.
