About Empowering Athena

What This Is

Empowering Athena is a resource for women over 40 building strength from the ground up — beginner strength training, nutrition grounded in aging physiology, and equipment guidance that assumes you’re starting from zero, not picking back up where a 25-year-old left off.

Why It Exists

Most fitness content is written for one of two people: a 25-year-old with nothing but time and cartilage to spare, or someone who already knows how to squat. If you’re neither, you get generic workouts wearing a “for her” label, or advice engineered to sell a supplement.

Empowering Athena exists because that gap needed filling by someone who’d actually lived on the wrong side of it. Every workout, nutrition guide, and equipment recommendation here is built around what an over-40 body actually needs — not a modified version of what worked for someone half your age.

What You’ll Find Here

  • Fitness Guidance: Beginner strength programs and progressions built for bodies that haven’t done structured training in years, or ever.
  • Nutrition Insights: Evidence-based information on protein, creatine, and body composition — framed around aging and longevity, not macro-counting for its own sake.
  • Equipment Guides: Straight recommendations for home gym gear, without the “buy everything” affiliate-site sales pitch.
  • Press & Media: See where Empowering Athena’s founder has been quoted and featured in outlets like Bustle, U.S. News, and Eat This Not That — full list on the Media Mentions page.

Who’s Behind This

Empowering Athena is written by Deb Simpson, NASM Certified Personal Trainer — a former IT and data analyst who went looking for real strength training guidance after her own doctor flagged her weight at 35, found the existing research wasn’t built for her, and did something about it. Want This Applied Directly to You?

Everything here is the framework. If you want it adapted to your specific body — injuries, schedule, starting point — instead of figuring out the adaptation yourself, that’s what Featherweight Fitness is for: Deb’s personal training business, offering virtual and in-home coaching for women over 40 building strength from the ground up.
